Jesus & Sterling send City clear of United

English Premier League

Manchester City restored their three-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Burnley on Wednesday evening.

Joao Cancelo, John Stones, Rodri, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling came back in the fold for City following their 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon.

It took the Citizens just three minutes to go in front after Gabriel Jesus reacted quickly to a spill from goalkeeper Nick Pope to head in from close-range following a shot from Bernardo Silva.

Burnley battled to keep up with the visitors’ all-out approach, as Sterling came close from a looping ball towards the near side minutes later but Pope smothered.

Sterling inevitably managed to get the better of Pope with a tap-in from close-range seven minutes to halftime following a low delivery from the right-side by Ilkay Gundogan.

City continued from where they left off in the first half, as Sterling beat the offside trap to go level with Pope who made use of his boot to deny the forward a brace.

Mahrez thought he had given City a third 12 minutes from resumption with a tap-in from the centre of the area, but he was flagged for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Burnley came forward midway in the second half as a volley on the turn from the near side by Matej Vydra flew over, while Oleksandr Zinchenko entered for Cancelo in the first change of the evening.

A few openings for the Citizens late on appeared, but the two first half goals proved enough to secure victory in the end.
