Why Klopp told Coutinho to join Bayern

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed why he told Philippe Coutinho to join Bayern Munich after being offered the opportunity to re-sign the playmaker from FC Barcelona.

Coutinho established himself as a global superstar with his displays in the Premier League with the Reds before earning a club-record transfer to FC Barcelona in 2018.

However, the Brazil playmaker failed to replicate the form in LaLiga during the two and half seasons under Ernesto Valverde and was subsequently made available for transfer.

The 27-year-old was mooted as a possible makeweight to lure Neymar back to the Camp Nou from Paris Saint-Germain but surprisingly ended up joining the Bundesliga giants on a loan.

With Bayern forking out a reported £7.6 million fee, as well as his wages for the duration of the season-long switch, Klopp has explained why the European champions opted against his return.

“I personally told him that Bayern and him would be a good fit," Klopp told German newspaper Bild. “He’s a world-class player and a really good signing for Bayern - and the Bundesliga.

“It may sound strange, but we didn’t have enough money to get him. We’d already spent all the money we got for him.”
