The 11-time Premier League winner was formerly a coach at Old Trafford but this is his first permanent manager position.

Scholes is a part-owner of Salford City and he was briefly caretaker manager of the club in 2015.

The former England midfielder will bring in the former Latics coach Mick Priest as his assistant with his first match in charge Tuesday evening’s league encounter with Yeovil.

Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam said: "Paul has won everything there is to win in football. He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see."

The Latics, a former club of Bafana Bafana midfielder Dean Furman, are currently 14th in the fourth tier of English football.
