Manchester United sign Rooney's son

English Premier League

Manchester United have completed the signing of Kai Rooney, the son of the Red Devils' all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney.

On Thursday evening, former Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney, who is the record goalscorer for both the club and his country, confirmed that his 11-year-old son Kai had signed for the record 20-time English champions.

"Proud day. Kai signing for Man Utd. Keep up the hard work son," the current Derby County interim co-manager wrote on Twitter, alongside a "heart" emoji.

Rooney's son had previously spent time with Manchester City's academy, according to Manchester Evening News, before moving to the United States during the former England international's spell with Major League Soccer side DC United.

The promising youngster, who is believed to also play as a forward, will have big shoes to fill if he is to live up to his father's legacy at Old Trafford, with the 35-year-old having scored a club-record 253 goals in 559 appearances for United.

Rooney Sr is also the most-capped outfield player and record goalscorer for England after scoring 53 goals in 120 caps for the Three Lions during his 15-year-long international career.
