Man Utd players 'unhappy' with Carrick

English Premier League

A number of Manchester United players are reportedly unhappy with the club's decision to appoint Michael Carrick as their temporary manager.

The Englishman was officially confirmed by the club as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's temporary replacement on Sunday and will lead the team in their crucial UEFA Champions League clash against Villarreal on Tuesday night.

United, who are in a poor run of form domestically, will be hoping to avoid a loss in Spain as they look to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

However, the Daily Mail has now reported that some of the Red Devils' players are already against the appointment of Carrick as interim boss due to a concern about his inexperience.

The retired midfielder was part of both Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer's coaching set-up at Old Trafford, and there are fears that very little will change as he and assistant coach Kieran McKenna, who largely ran training sessions under the Norwegian, have been deemed to be part of the reason why the club is struggling of late.

Members of the United dressing room are thus worried they will continue to be stuck in a rut, but Carrick has backed himself ahead of the UCL tie against Villarreal.

"In terms of what I've been told, my mindset is preparing for tomorrow, giving my best," he told reporters in a pre-match press conference, per Manchester Evening News.

"I know the club very well, been here an awful long time now. It's the sacrifice and dedication you need, whether that is one game, two, or a stretch longer.

"A big game for us in terms of group stages and I will go about my job exactly as I know."
