Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly lining up a shock move for a Chelsea flop, who spent the 2018/19 season on loan with Serie A outfit AC Milan.
According to RMC, Ole Gunnar Solskajer's side are believed to be interested in securing the services of French midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, as a possible replacement for the ageing Nemanja Matic.
Bakayoko, 24, completed a move to Stamford Bridge in 2017 from AS Monaco in a deal worth £40 million (R707 million), but struggled to cement a starting berth under then coach Antonio Conte, prompting his Blues successor, Maurizio Sarri to loan Bakayoko out in a season-long deal to the Rossoneri.
At Milan, Bakayoko came close to rediscovering his best form, making 42 appearances in all competitions for Milan, while finding the back of the net on one occasion.
With Paul Pogba's future at United hanging in the balance, Solskjaer is believed to be on the lookout for a new central midfielder and Bakayoko is reportedly being earmarked as a potential transfer target.
The France international linked up with his Blues teammates for their pre-season tour of Ireland, and will be hoping to impress new manager Frank Lampard, who will assess Bakayoko and a number former loanees ahead of the 2019/2020 season.
Arsenal and Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly also monitoring Bakayoko's situation with keen interest.
