Ex-EPL star's son signs Man Utd deal

English Premier League

Charlie Savage, the son of former Premier League footballer Robbie Savage, has signed his first professional contract with Manchester United.

On Wednesday afternoon, 17-year-old midfielder Charlie Savage announced that he had put pen to paper on his first professional deal with Premier League giants Manchester United.

"Delighted to have signed my first professional contract at Man Utd. I would like to thank all of my friends, family and everyone at New Era Global Sports for all their support. The hard work continues," he posted from his personal Twitter account.

The promising youngster, who has scored twice for the Red Devils’ U-18 side this season, hails from a proud footballing family and his father, Robbie, was also a graduate of the club’s famed academy.

Although he never managed to represent the first team, Savage Snr. went on to establish himself as a regular in the Premier League, where he made 346 appearances across spells with Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County.

He was also a full international with the Wales national team and represented his country on 39 occasions, before taking on a role as a popular presenter and pundit for BBC Sport and BT Sport following his official retirement in 2011.

Following news of his son securing his first professional contract with the Red Devils, the 1999/2000 League Cup winner was quick to celebrate the milestone with his social media followers.

"So, so proud of you!" he tweeted. "Your hard work, dedication and desire is paying off! Keep working as hard as you possibly can, there will be ups and downs but keep believing in yourself. People will want to knock you down but keep getting up and showing everyone what you can do."

Savage is the latest second generation starlet to make headlines at Old Trafford after the club recently signed 11-year-old Kai Rooney, the son of all-time record goalscorer Wayne Rooney, while Harvey Neville, the son of Phil Neville, also landed his first pro deal last year.
