After securing manager Pep Guardiola's future, Manchester City could now turn their focus to reuniting the former FC Barcelona boss with Argentina superstar Lionel Messi.
On Thursday, City ended speculation surrounding Guardiola's future at the club when they announced that the Spaniard had signed a two-year extension on his current contract at the Etihad Stadium.
The move comes as a welcome boost for the Citizens as they look to reclaim the Premier League title from rivals Liverpool, and it could also have massive ramifications for the club's reported transfer plans for the January window.
City are currently the frontrunners to secure disgruntled Barcelona captain Messi's signature, and were previously reported to have begun planning a deal to sign the 33-year-old in the upcoming transfer window.

Messi, whose Barca contract expires at the end of the season, spent four highly-successful seasons under Guardiola during their time together at the Camp Nou, and is said to hold his former boss in high regard.
The 49-year-old's decision to renew his contract in England could thus play a key role in City's pursuit of the six-time Ballon d'Or winner, with his relationship with Guardiola giving the club an apparent advantage over other reported suitors such as Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.
