Five centre-backs Liverpool could sign

English Premier League

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that the club are looking to sign a new centre-back amid the ongoing defensive crisis. Here are five players who might fit the bill.

The reigning Premier League champions have been rocked by injury this season with regular centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ruled out for what may be the remainder of the campaign, while Joel Matip frequently spent time on the sidelines as well.

Defensive midfielder Fabinho and academy products Rhys William and Nathaniel Philiips have deputised admirably but, after the Brazilian and Matip were both struck down with new blows, Klopp has revealed that the club is now looking to address the issue.

"I don't know, but we will try [and sign someone]" the former Borussia Dortmund manager said ahead of this weekend's match against West Ham United, per Goal. "We always try. It would be funny if you thought Liverpool were fine with the situation, that we don't care or don't try.

"We try, but as you know, there's nothing to say until something happens. We will see. The situation yesterday [Matip's injury] didn't make it easier but still we are trying to do the right things. If it's possible then we will do it. If not, then not."

Among the players that Liverpool are rumoured to be interested in are Real Madrid centre-back Eder Militao, who has struggled for game time at Los Blancos this season, and Lille's highly-rated Dutch defender Sven Botman, who could be regarded as a long-term partner to Van Dijk.

Reports on Friday suggested that the Reds were interested in a surprise loan move for New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long, which would satisfy the club's need for a short-term solution given that the USA international would need to return in March for the start of the Major League Soccer campaign.

Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay is an experienced free agent who might pop up on Klopp's radar, although his age and susceptibility to injury will be a concern, while other reports claim that Liverpool could increase efforts land versatile Bayern Munich star David Alaba, whose contract in Germany expires in June.
