Man United's cup run ended by Boro

Manchester United's run in the FA Cup came to an end at the hands of Middlesbrough following a penalty shoot-out loss on Friday evening.

Man United made five changes to the side that beat West Ham United, as goalkeeper Dean Henderson was given a run, alongside recalls for Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Jason Sancho.

The Red Devils had a perfect start, as Sancho had a lobbed effort that came off the bar in the second minute and the hosts were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute after Pogba was brought down in the box.

Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to take the spot-kick for United, aiming for the bottom corner, the Portuguese guided his shot just wide.

However, Sancho eventually broke the deadlock for Ralf Rangnick's charges five minutes later with a strike across goal that found the bottom corner after a through ball by Bruno Fernandes.

The Red Devils kept on pressurising Boro in the closing phase of the first stanza but they were denied clear openings, as they settled for a narrow lead heading into the half-time break.

The hosts had a good start in the second stanza, creating better chances but they were wasteful in the last third, with Rashford and Ronaldo missing big chances in the six-yard box in quick succession.

Chris Wilder's troops found the equaliser on a counter-attack in the 64th minute after Matt Crooks finished off a looping strike from Duncan Watmore, the goal was subject to a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check for a handball but the goal stood.

Rangnick only made his first changes in the last eight minutes, as Rashford was replaced by Anthony Elanga for fresh legs upfront and Fred came on for Pogba for the same reason in midfield.

United were desperate for the equaliser in the dying minutes, with Boro absorbing the pressure and looking to hit them on counter-attacks but there no winner in regulation time, as extra-time was required.

However, neither side created decent chances in extra-time and a penalty shoot-out was required after the sides could not be seperated.

Middlesbrough held their nerve to convert all eight penalties Elanga missed a decisive spot-kick for United, sending his effort over the bar, as Boro went through to the fifth round.
