Chelsea bagged their third straight win in the Premier League after seeing off Newcastle United 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Tammy Abraham continued leading the forth up top alongside Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, while Newcastle missed Callum Wilson due to injury.
Chelsea launched the first scare in the first ten minutes when a thumping header from Abraham forced Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow to acrobatically palm for a corner-kick.
From the resultant corner, the Blues had the lead after a teasing ball from Mason Mount trickled off the boot of Federico Fernandez with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruling out foul play.
Newcastle recovered from their slumbering start and managed to ask questions of Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy through the likes of Joelinton.
Possession turnover on the side of Abraham led the hosts on a counter-attack ten minutes to halftime courtesy of Allan Saint-Maximin, but Kurt Zouma recovered to clear the danger.
The Magpies started the second half with an injury forcing Jamaal Lascelles to make way for fellow defender Fabian Schar.
Schar’s entry nearly got off to a horror start ten minutes from the break after Werner robbed possession to go clear with Darlow, but opted to play in Ziyech instead of shooting.
Abraham put the Blues on a comfortable footing midway in the second half as a sliding ball from Werner released the former who took the ball in his stride for a calm finish.
Newcastle went close to reduce the arrears following the last 20 minutes when Sean Longstaff carved space to let off from 25 yards out, but the crossbar rescued the Blues.
The Blues went in search for more goals late in the contest, but opted for a 2-0 victory to go to the top of the table.
