Liverpool clinch Charity Shield title

English Premier League

Liverpool won their first FA Community Shield title since 2006 after securing a 3-1 win over rivals Manchester City on Saturday evening.

The Reds missed star goalkeeper Alisson Becker and furthermore begin life without Sadio Mane, whereas City give big off-season signing Erling Braut Haaland a debut.

An electrifying start saw Mohamed Salah cut-in right of the offensive third and battered teasing shot off the side-netting following smart piece of play from the Egyptian.

Liverpool did put their noses in front 21 minutes in after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s curl deflected off Nathan Ake and in off the far post as he had picked off a cutback from Salah outside the area.

After a quiet spell, Haaland could’ve brought City back on level terms with a succession of attempts minutes to halftime but he was unsuccessful in his quest.

Here are the big transfers that were completed this week!

The Citizens kept their bright spark in the opening phase in the second half and were a whisker away from levelling as Adrian produced a close-range block to parry Riyad Mahrez.

Substitutions from either bench near the closing period came when Darwin Nunez came on Roberto Firmino before Julian Alvarez replaced Mahrez and Phil Foden entered for Jack Grealish.

These additions sparked optimism for the Reds as Nunez threatened a second off a one-on-one, but goalkeeper Ederson Moraes smothered.

That miss haunted them this as City equalized when Alvarez executed a loose ball from close-range in the final 20 minutes with the goal initially disallowed before being overturned after a review.

Liverpool restored advantage seven minutes to go after Salah drilled a spot-kick into the bottom-corner following a hand ball off Ruben Dias.

The Reds finished off the contest when debutant Nunez dropped down in the area and headed a knockdown past Ederson in the added time.

With seconds to go, City missed out on a second after Haaland slammed a loose ball from close-range off against the post and over the top as the Reds marched to victory.
