Chelsea inch closer to record signing

English Premier League

Having already signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, Premier League giants Chelsea are now inching closer to completing a club-record deal for Kai Havertz.

Reports from Germany reveal that the Blues have re-entered negotiations with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen over a possible deal for Havertz, after previously appearing to have cooled their interest in the Germany star.

According to Bild, Frank Lampard's side had a new offer of €65 million plus €15 million in add-ons (R1.6 billion in total) rejected by Leverkusen, who are said to be holding out for a figure of €100 million (R2 billion) for the 21-year-old.

While the clubs are still some way apart in respect of the transfer fee, Chelsea are believed to have already settled personal terms with the highly-rated midfielder, who has also courted the attentions of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Should the two clubs reach an agreement, Havertz would become Chelsea's most expensive player of all time, breaking the record fee of €72 million (R.14 billion) the Blues paid to sign goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018.
