Villa managed to come from behind to seal a 2-1 win over a ten-man West Bromwhich in the promotion play-offs semi-final first-leg at Villa Park.
West Brom were ahead at halftime following a great finish from Dwight Gayle 16 minutes from kick-off.
Villa responded in the second period through Conor Hourihane on 75 minutes before Tammy Abraham nabbed the all-important winner from the penalty spot four minutes later.
Gayle was dismissed two minutes to the final whistle, as the second-leg encounter awaits in midweek.
Derby County 0-1 Leeds United
Leeds United secured a vital 1-0 victory over Derby County at the iPro Stadium in the second promotion play-off semi-final.
Leeds took another step to end a 15-year hiatus from the Premier League after Kemar Roofe prodded home the winner after 55 minutes.
Derby have it all to do in the return-leg set for Wednesday evening at the Elland Road in West Yorkshire.
