The five-time Ballon d'Or winner will be making his first appearance for the Premier League side in 12 years after leaving Old Trafford for Real Madrid in 2009.

Ronaldo revealed on Thursday that he would "put pressure" on the manager to start him as he is raring to go, but it remains unknown as to whether he will start or be brought on against the Magpies.

"We've got mutual respect for each other, but he knows I've got to make the decisions when to play, when not to play," Solskjaer said, according to The Independent.

"It's my job to get the best out of him, that comes from communication. He doesn't need me to tell him what to do.

"He's been having a good pre-season with Juventus, played with the national team, had a good week with us, he'll definitely be on the pitch at some point, that's for sure.

"He seems happy to be back. Mood's been very good.

"Cristiano speaks with Edinson, to pass up his shirt shows the respect he's got for Cristiano + Cristiano speaking to Edinson shows the respect the other way. Two top pros."
