Arsenal player in betting scandal?

English Premier League

Arsenal could find themselves in the midst of a betting scandal after the Football Association revealed they are looking into the on-pitch behaviour of a Gunners player earlier this season.

It has been claimed that bookmakers have flagged to the FA that a suspicious amount of money was placed on one of Mikel Arteta's players to get a yellow card during a Premier League fixture earlier in this campaign.

English football's governing body is looking into the claim, but the player's identity remains unknown due to legal reasons.

"The FA is aware of the matter in question and is looking into it," a statement from the organisation read, per The Athletic.

Gambling insiders are believed to have described the amount of money placed on the player to receive a yellow card during the fixture as "highly unusual".

There have been previous cases similar to this in English football in the past, like that of Lincoln City right-back Bradley Wood, who received a six-year ban in 2018 after he was found guilty of intentionally receiving yellow cards during an FA Cup run.

In a slightly different incident, Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier was banned for 10 games last season, and received a fine of £70 000 (R1.4 million), after instructing a friend to place a bet on his transfer to Atletico Madrid going through in 2019.
