Pule calls for big-team mentality

Pirates should be wary of taking the Seychelles outfit lightly, says Pule, who previously faced the same opposition in the CAF Confederation Cup with former club Bidvest Wits in 2016.

The Clever Boys eased to a comfortable 9-0 aggregate victory over the islanders, with the 26-year-old getting on the scoresheet in the home leg.

However, he has warned against complacency and called on his teammates to be mindful that the visitors will have nothing to lose at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.

“I remember the match against Light Stars. Some might think because we previously won that game 6-0 [at home], our game on Wednesday will be a walkover,” Pule told The Bucs’ website.

“But I’ve already told my teammates that this is one team that we cannot afford to underestimate. Teams like this have nothing to lose.

“The players give it their all and because they have nothing to lose; they have no pressure. The pressure will be all on us.

“We need to show we are a big team and we can only do so by dominating the match from the first whistle. We cannot afford to underestimate them.”

The Bafana Bafana winger also cautioned that the team that lost to Wits back then may have progressed significantly, as has been the case with Pirates since their disastrous campaign in 2016/17.

“Furthermore, two years is a long time in football. The team that Wits played two years ago will not necessarily be the team that Pirates face on Wednesday,” he added.

“The same can be said for us at this stage; we have gone from failing to qualify for the top eight to finishing second and competing in the Champions League a year later.”
