Bucs held by Stars at Orlando

CAF Champions League

Pirates were promising inside the opening exchanges as Vincent Pule nailed the first chance on goal.

After surviving the earlier pressure, Stars looked promising on the break away on a few occasions, but they were unable to test Jackson Mabokgwane.

A low free-kick from Pule created an opening for Linda Mntambo to get an attempt away but it went dismally wide midway through the first half.

Nearing halftime, Bucs didn't stop their persistent approach with a few half-chances continuing to fall, although the Stars goalkeeper hardly had a big save to make.

Five minutes before the break, Justin Shonga missed the target from close range with a first-time volley following possession turnover.

In the second half, Pirates continued with their dominance but their struggle to break down the opposing defence remained a tough ask.

The first meaningful chance arrived after the hour mark when Augustine Mulenga picked out Justin Shonga, but his compatriot failed to make the most of the chance with a poor finish.

The hosts threw on Thabo Qalinge for Abbubaker Mobara for the final 15 minutes of the half as they went in search of winning goal.

Linda Mntambo had arguably the game’s best chance to win it for Pirates 10 minutes from the full-time whistle, but his shot from close-range was easily stopped and palmed away for a corner.

Nevertheless, the Buccaneers were unable to break the deadlock in the closing stages as the first leg ended all square in Soweto.
