Sirino, Vila steer Downs past Togo-Port

CAF Champions League

Sundowns started promisingly and the first real chance fell to Jeremy Brockie at close range, but the New Zealander failed to tuck it away blasting horribly wide.

Togo-Port came up with the goods too as dangerman Ayi Hunlede aimed to cut inside of Wayne Arendse, but from a tight angle fired over the top.

The opener would duly arrive from the Brazilians as Gaston Sirino tucked home from close range after being set up by Themba Zwane.

Minutes later, Sirino turned provider when his cross-field pass found Sibusiso Vilakazi for a cheeky back-heel finish for a two-goal cushion.

Sundowns were not done and in pursuit of more goals, as Brockie failed to profit from close range after being set up by Sirino following high-quality passes through to the attacking third.

A quality cross-field delivery off a free-kick picked out Yacoubou for a first-time shot, but Denis Onyango was quick to get down and blocked away the effort.

That proved to be the final piece of goal-mouth action in the half as Pitso Mosimane's men went into the break with a comfortable lead.

The Brazilians moved at a medium pace earlier in the second half, with Hlompho Kekana's attempts to hit a long-range effort coming to naught.

Togo-Port were showing little threat, and Downs nearly made them pay at the midway point when Brockie found the side-netting off a cross from the left side.

With time ticking by, Tebogo Langerman peeled off a cross-field delivery and let fly with a rocketing shot but Jean Klomegan showed tremendous acrobatics to deny him a chance on the scoreboard.

Sundowns introduced new Venezuelan signing Jose Meza to their attack and his entry brought great excitement amongst the club’s faithful.

The Brazilians were living dangerously though and it saw them concede through substitute Kokou Kloukpo, who ran onto a long ball to lob Onyango.

In the end, there was to be no comeback from Togo-Port.
