Iheanacho stunner sinks Egypt at AFCON

African Football

Nigeria got their Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Group B off to a flying start after defeating seven-time winners Egypt 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Taiwo Awoniyi led the attack for the Super Eagles, while Mohamed Trezeguet joined Mohamed Salah in the Pharaohs' attack.

Egypt's plans had to be change after 12 minutes when Mohamed Abdelmonem repalced Akram Tawfik, who picked up an injury.

The 2013 winners got the breakthrough in the 31st minute when Joe Aribo's knockdown found Iheanacho who took once touch before rifling the ball into the back of the net.

Carlos Quieroz's charges were unable to find a way back into the contest as the Super Eagles did well to see out the rest of the encounter to begin Group D with maximum points.

Here are the highest-ranked African nations in the latest rankings.

Algeria 0-0 Sierra Leone

Algeria got the defence of their Africa Cup of Nations title off to a disappointing start after being held by Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone were making their debut in the competition and handed a debut to former Liverpool defender Steven Caulker, who switch allegiance from England before the tournament.

Caulker's inclusion proved to be vital as Sierra Leone managed to frustrat the defending champions, who extended their unbeaten run to 35 encounters.

The Foxes will now turn their attention to Equatorial Guniea on Sunday while Sierra Leone will be aming to secure their first-ever Afcon win against one of the favourites, Cote d'Ivoire.

Sudan 0-0 Guinea-Bissau

Sudan and Guinea-Bissau settled for a share of the spoils in their Africa Cup of Nations opener at the Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia.

While there weren't a lot clear-cut openings, Baciro Cande's charges had the perfect chance to break deadlock in the 82nd minute after being awarded a penalty.

However, Pele was unable to take advantage after penalty was saved by Sudan shot-stopper Ali Achrine before the ball was cleared away.

This was only the second goalless draw of the tournament after Algeria's stalemate with Sierra Leone.
