Downs want strong start in Nigeria

Sundowns were knocked out in the group stages last time, strangely, with just one win at home. They started the campaign slow, drawing two and losing once in their first three group matches.

It proved to be difficult for them to bounce back from their stuttering start and they eventually finished in third place, missing out on a spot in the knockout phase.

This time round, Pitso Mosimane’s men want to do things differently, starting with a victory over Nigerian side Lobi Stars at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium tonight (18h00).

“This game is very important. We have to do our level best to get maximum points,” Morena said from Nigeria.

“If you have a chance to kill it [the game] away [from home], rather than to say ‘let’s keep it and we will get a result at home’. So killing it away is going to be a big bonus for us.”

Speaking about what let them down last year, Morena touched on the chances they were creating but not converting.

“I think due to the chances we created and did not convert, but I think now we have learnt our lesson and things are going to go differently. We are going to give our best and try not to concede in the late stages of the game and make sure we convert our chances.”
