Petersen out for six weeks

Petersen, who has started all eight of Ajax’s matches so far this season, suffered a hip injury in his side’s 2-1 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic last weekend, and is set for an extended period on the sidelines to recover.

“Brandon didn’t come out of the game last Saturday very good, so he won’t be playing, and Jody will play [this weekend],” head coach Stanley Menzo told reporters. “He had an X-ray yesterday, and we only got the results today. It’s his hip, but we don’t know how serious it is.”

The goalkeeper himself, when asked about the extent of his injury, says he was told he will miss over a month of action.

“I’ll be out for six weeks,” he told

Petersen’s injury opens the door for February to work his way back into the team, having last played in a 1-1 Absa Premiership draw with Golden Arrows in April – the last of his 19 league starts last year, before losing the gloves to his teammate.

Ajax have two new injury concerns as well, with defensive duo Isaac Nhlapo and Junaid Sait missing the trip to Polokwane for Saturday’s Telkom Knockout clash against Rise and Shine.

“Isaac Nhlapo has also had some troubles, so then I had to choose: do I risk playing him on Saturday, and then maybe lose him for sure next week? So he won’t travel with us,” Menzo said. “Junaid Sait came to us this morning and said he felt his hamstring, so we won’t take a risk with him. And then there’s Tercious Malepe and Morne Nel who have been sidelined for a while. So those are the five – three new ones – that won’t play.”
