As KickOff.com revealed on Sunday, the former Free State Stars defender is being used in a swap deal to secure players from the Chilli Boys.
The deal that has been struck between the clubs will see James Okwuosa and Marc van Heerden join Pirates – along with returning loanee Thembinkosi Lorch – in exchange for Chabalala, Sello Japhta, Donald Mokondolela and Nkosinathi Mthiyane.
So far Lorch has pitched up for training at Mayfair but Okwuosa and Van Heerden are yet to pull on a training jersey despite reportedly passing their medicals on Tuesday.
According to a source close to both Bucs and Chippa, there are still details that need to be ironed out between the two clubs before the deal can be completed.
“There are a few problems with regards to the deal. Justice Chabalala was here at training with the rest of the other players reported to be going to Chippa,” reveals the source.
“There could be some changes in the deal,” he adds.
The decision to use Chabalala as a makeweight has raised a few eyebrows considering the player has been one of the team’s better-performing defenders in a poor season to date.
However, Pirates have been pursuing Nigerian centre-back Okwuosa for more than a year and have finally landed their man, and have secured a left-footed set-piece specialist in the form of Van Heerden.
