Khumalo only arrived at Chiefs at the beginning of last term but has now slipped further down the pecking order behind regular Tsepo Masilela and new signing Philani Zulu, who is at home anywhere on the left flank.
Last season, Khumalo managed 16 appearances in all competitions but the last time he played in the league was on February 11 against Maritzburg United, with Masilela the preferred choice for the rest of the campaign.
The only game time Khumalo has since enjoyed came in the Nedbank Cup.
The former youth international is keen to play and has made that known to Amakhosi, who are considering the possibility of loaning him back to his hometown club.
Chiefs further signalled their disinterest in the 27-year-old’s services for the season after releasing him to join the second-string Bafana Bafana team currently preparing for their 2018 CHAN qualifier against Zambia on Saturday.
South Africa square off with Chipolopolo on Saturday at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola while Chiefs play their first league game of the season away at Bloemfontein Celtic the next day.
