Manzini, who joined Usuthu from Chippa at the beginning of last term in a swap deal involving Ayabulela Konqobe, has fallen down the pecking order this season following the arrival of Argentine hitman Emiliano Tade from Auckland City.
Coach Cavin Johnson also has Mabhuti Khenyeza, Mhlengi Cele and Siyabonga Nomvethe as options upfront.
The 'Beast', as he is known by his teammates, started his stint well in Durban as he scored four goals in his first seven matches.
However, a combination of injuries and bad form saw him end 2017/18 with five goals in 21 appearances in all competitions.
"Rhulani Manzini is going back to Chippa. I'm not sure if it's a loan or a permanent deal, but both clubs are talking," a source tells KickOff.com.
AmaZulu media officier Brilliant Mkhathini was tight-lipped when asked to comment.
"There's nothing confirmed yet," was all Mkhathini would say.
Usuthu could be looking to make space for Bongi Ntuli as they are currently negotiating for the forward's services with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Ntuli was in the stands when Johnson's side beat Free State Stars 2-1 at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Sunday.
