The result nevertheless lifted Maritzburg above Chippa United to third on the Absa Premiership table with 21 points from 14 games - 12 points adrift of leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
AmaTuks climbed two spots to 12th in the standings with 14 points.
Maritzburg were the better side in the first half and had the first decent effort on goal in the 12th minute when Mondi Cele drove into the box from the right wing, but fired into the side-netting from 16 yards out.
The home side almost scored from a series of corners around the 20 minute-mark. Thamsanqa Mhkize delivered both set-pieces with both ending in the same result as Thokozani Sekotlong and John Paintsil headed inches wide.
Mkhize created a chance for himself in the 28th minute after some fine individual skill saw him into space roughly 22 yards out from goal, but his shot was brilliantly saved by the keeper.
In the 42nd minute Maritzburg came close to opening the scoring yet again, but the finishing in front of goal was poor as Nhlanhla Vilakazi fired over the target from just inside the box.
The second half saw Tuks come into the game a bit more when Thabo Mosadi played Atusaye Nyondo through on goal in the 49th minute, but he shot wide with just the keeper to beat.
Ten minutes later Mosadi had a shot on goal from distance himself, but he saw his effort well-saved.
In the 75th minute Tebogo Monyai met a corner-kick with a strong header, but his six-yard attempt shaved the wrong side of the Maritzburg post.
Ten minutes later Geofrey Massa tried his luck from 35 yards out, but his thunderbolt was brilliantly turned around the post by the Maritzburg goalkeeper.
