The 22-year-old was signed from Mbombela United last year and brought into the Team of Choice’s Diski Challenge squad, but after only a handful of appearances, he impressed enough to earn promotion to the first-team.
His exploits on the field, which included three goals and as many assists, helped Maritzburg clinch a top-eight finish in the recently-concluded Absa Premiership campaign and Maboe has been further rewarded with a place in the Bafana team.
“I’m am pleasantly surprised. I work hard at my game to keep improving, but I was not expecting a Bafana call-up so early. It will be a great experience for me, playing for my country,” he said via a post on Maritzburg United’s Facebook page.
United communications manager Brian Zuma talked up Maboe’s chances of making a success of himself for club and country, adding: "This boy is the future of Bafana. Besides being a talented workaholic, his attitude will take him far.”
