Tau is having the season of his life, with eight goals and nine assists in all competitions. A lot more is expected from the 23-year-old as Sundowns look to win the league and cup double to end the campaign on a high.
Mosimane, who is on a mission to make Tau the best in the country, says the Sundowns product should be in a good position to win the award which was scooped by former Cape Town City skipper Lebogang Manyama last season, but it’s not a foregone conclusion.
“I think his assists and goals and the way his plays at this point in time, I think it puts him in a good position to win footballer of the year because he is doing it week in and week out,” the former Bafana Bafana coach said.
“It depends on the criteria. If the critieria is goals then it’s [Rodney] Ramagalela. If the criteria is about assists, then it’s Percy. If the criteria is about influencing big games and lots of games, then it’s Percy. He has been involved in many goals.”
Mosimane gave an example of how Oscarine Masuluke’s bicycle kick goal against Orlando Pirates last season earned him a FIFA Puskas Award nomination, but he did not win the PSL Goal of the Season accolade.
“But I am not part of that. I have seen Oscar Masuluke going to London for the awards, but he got no award at home. Those things are possible, so don’t jump the gun. ‘Shabba’’s [Siphiwe Tshabalala] goal won it and the guy when to the Oscars. But it’s okay, it’s part of football,” he said.
