Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker says even though their main war is to stay in the Absa Premiership, they are not going to roll over when they visit Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium this weekend.
Stellies have a massive task of facing the Buccaneers in a space of seven days, first in the Telkom Knockout Cup on Saturday evening, before hosting them in the league next week.
Barker has hinted on using the cup tie to give opportunity to fringe players.
"Ja no look obviously we've got to look at the game as a fantastic opportunity for the club." Barker tells Kickoff.com.
"We now gonna be in a Telkom Cup against Pirates so we've done well to get ourselves into this competition, so we looking forward to this great opportunity for the players to showcase their ability. Obviously Pirates is a tough team, we know that we respect our position, but we cannot go there and be fearful, we have to play with freedom, the pressure is not on us whatsoever, all the pressure is on Orlando Pirates and so we just gonna go there and we gonna give our best, we prepared well, preparations are good. Confidence is building each and every week...so lets see what happens.
"Look at the end of the day we got a war to win, a war to win is to be in this league come the end of the season. But to win the war you got many battles in between. Some you win some you lose but we got to win the war. We play Pirates again the following week, and for me yes it's a great opportunity you wanna win trophies, players wanna win cups, you wanna be in Cup Final so definitely we going there to win a match. But we gonna take one game at a time and the next fixture that we only worried about is this Saturday's cup game and then next week we'll concentrate on the league. So it's important to play well in every match, you wanna perform as a footballer, and so the players are raring to go, everyone wants to play and everybody is pushing really hard to get a starting berth. Look ideally you wanna win both, there's no reason we can't win both. But we cannot worry about next week, we first have to work worry about this match so, and look this match does give us an opportunity to look at one and two things you know. So we'll use the match to continue growing as a club providing opportunity to some players, and after the game we will then sit down and plan for next week."The pressure is not on us, the pressure is on them. You know they are expected to beat Stellenbosch a new team in the league. You know they are a good team Pirates, they score goals...yes they've also conceded but they are a great attacking unit. I'm sure if they sort themselves out defensively they can you know still do well this season. They haven't played for a while, they had time to prepare, they've had time to work, couple of players are coming back from injuries so, you know they gonna be raring to go I'm sure they gonna be you know a formidable team to face on the weekend. We also have some experienced men you know Robyn Johannes, Marc Van Heerden. They've got a very good coach in Rhulani [Mokwena] a top drawer, Fadlu Davids his assistant also a top drawer. You know Stellenbosch are on the up now, and we want to continue to put ourselves up there and there's no better way to do that than by beating a team like Orlando Pirates in their backyard."
