Chiefs' big conundrum for TKO semi

Telkom Knockout

Kaizer Chiefs face a stern test in their next match against Maritzburg United and coach Ernst Middendorp has one major decision to make amid three changes he is forced to make.

Chiefs will meet Maritzburg in the Telkom Knockout semi-finals at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Sunday afternoon (15h00) as the look to take a step closer towards ending their four-and-a-half-year trophy drought.

Amakhosi were last in a cup final back in May, when they fell short of glory in rather shocking fashion against GladAfrica Championship side TS Galaxy.

But Middendorp is adamant on making history by restoring the club to their glory days with their first trophy in over 54 months, with The Team of Choice their penultimate hurdle.

The German, meanwhile, has a few decisions to make in as far as his selection is concerned, with three key players ruled out of the clash through suspension – goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, defender Erick Mathoho and midfielder Willard Katsande.

Naturally, with Itumeleng Khune still on the mend from his injury picked up over seven weeks ago, Bruce Bvuma is expected to replace Akpeyi upon his one-match ban.

In midfield, Chiefs are not short of options with Kearyn Baccus also expected to make a return from injury which has kept him out since the start of October.

But the biggest poser for Middendorp is a replacement for Mathoho, who picked up a red card against Orlando Pirates last weekend, with second-choice centre-back Siyabonga Ngezana still in Egypt with South Africa’s under-23 team.
