The Clever Boys scored their goals through Jabulani Shongwe, Buhle Mkhwanazi and Vincent Pule at the Bidvest Stadium and have become the first team to book a place in Monday’s quarterfinal draw.
Wits started the match strongly and created a great chance to open the scoring as early as the seventh minute. Vincent Pule played a one-two that put him one-on-one with goalkeeper Sage Stephens, but he opted for a poor pass instead of taking on the responsibility himself.
The Birds offered little in attack, but almost got lucky in the 24th minute. A free kick from Dikgang Mabalane was met by a Wits defender, but the ball rebounded off Ashraf Hendricks and nearly crept into the home side’s net.
However, Wits got their just rewards for a strong first half performance when Jabulani Shongwe put them ahead 10 minutes before the break. The former Mamelodi Sundowns man curled a beautiful left-footed shot into the top corner from 20 metres out to put the hosts 1-0 up.
It took just 15 minutes of the second half for the Clever Boys to double their advantage. Sameehg Doutie provided a perfect in-swinging corner kick from the left and Buhle Mkhwanazi powered home an unstoppable header at the near post to make it 2-0 on the hour mark.
Six minutes later it was 3-0. Some slick passing from Wits saw Doutie whip in another fine cross, this time from the right flank, and youngster Vincent Pule arrived at the far post to steer home a perfectly executed left-footed volley.
