"It was a very difficult game on a very difficult pitch," Broos said post-match.
"I said to the players before the match that we don't need the trophy for the football-playing team but we need the trophy today for the team with the most character.
"We showed that character, that mentality even after the equaliser scored by Ethiopia where we fought for every ball.
"We won at last and it's a great win!"
The win sees Broos' side maintain their lead at the top of Group G with a return leg against Ethiopia to follow at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
Bafana lead Group G with 7 points after three matches played, one point ahead of Ghana (6) who defeated Zimbabwe by 3-1 to move into second place.
Kick-off for the return leg at FNB Stadium is at 18:00.
