Why SA star missed Liverpool clash

The reason behind South African midfielder Khanya Leshabela's absence during Shrewsbury Town's FA Cup clash against Liverpool has seemingly been revealed.

Leshabela, who is on loan from Premier League side Leicester City, was a notable absentee for Shrewsbury Town as the club succumbed to a 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Third Round of the FA Cup on Sunday evening.

The 22-year-old made brief cameos in each of the club's previous two matches in the competition this season, featuring as a late substitute in wins over Stratford Town and Carlisle United, but played no part in the encounter at Anfield.

While no official reason was given for his exclusion from the matchday squad, Leshabela was named as one of two players at the club, alongside Aaron Pierre, who had tested positive for Covid-19 towards the end of last month.

Both players have since recovered, with Pierre featuring four around 17 minutes in the clash against Liverpool, but the encounter appeared to come too soon for the South African to make his return to action.

Leshabela has struggled for game time this season and has featured in just nine matches across all competitions for the League One side, including three apiece in the league and the EFL Trophy, as well as a solitary outing in the Carabao Cup.

He previously made his Premier League debut for parent club Leicester last season when he took to the field during the Foxes' comprehensive 5-0 victory over Sheffield United in March.
