Veldwijk: It was the best game I ever played

SA Players Abroad

Bafana Bafana striker Lars Veldwijk has revealed how a remarkable four-goal haul ranks as the most memorable goalscoring performance of his career thus far.

The 30-year-old currently plies his trade with Suwon FC in South Korea's K League 1 where he recently ended the 2021 campaign as the division's second-highest goalscorer with 18 goals in 37 appearances.

Included in that tally was a remarkable four-goal haul in July which inspired the newly-promoted Suwon to a 5-2 come-from-behind win over the then-reigning Asian champions, Ulsan FC, and which he describes as the best performance of his career.

"I think it was my goals against Ulsan," the seven-cap South Africa international tells when asked to name his favourite goal. "It's difficult to choose one goal but overall, I think that was the best game I ever played."

Veldwijk commenced with his ruthless goalscoring display when he leveled matters on the half-hour mark – Ulsan having opened the scoring through Georgia international Valeri Qazaishvili – when he netted a glancing header from a well-worked corner.

Seven minutes later, the Dutch-born striker was at it again when he carried the ball from the halfway line to the edge of the opposition box, where he executed a well-worked one-two with strike-partner Yang Dong-Hyen before firing his side into the lead.

He then completed a 10-minute hat-trick moments later when he netted a right-footed effort beyond Jo Hyeon-Woo in goal and added insult to injury by assisting Dong-Hyen for Suwon's fourth on the stroke of half-time.

Ulsan's players would have breathed a collective sigh of relief to hear the referee's whistle signal the start of the interval but that relief was short-lived as Veldwijk crowned his haul with another well-taken taken goal just four minutes after the break.

On this occasion, the former Excelsior, PEC Zwolle and Sparta Rotterdam star expertly executed a Cruyff turn to leave his marker stranded inside the box before clinically finishing beyond the hapless Hyeon-Woo.

"Scoring four goals and getting an assist in an away game against the Asian Champions League winners, three of which came within like 11 or 12 minutes of each other in the first half, was an unbelievable feeling," he adds.

"The third or fourth goal I scored was of very good quality, and even the first one, the header, was very good as well so it's very difficult to choose one goal. For sure, though, it was the game of my life."
