Foster surprised to join Fati, Haaland

Former Orlando Pirates striker Lyle Foster has shared his reaction upon learning of his name being amongst the world's most talented stars up for the 2020 Golden Boy award.

Foster was earlier this week named as one of the Top 100 candidates for the annual Golden Boy award by Italian football publication Tuttosport.

The 19-year-old, who is currently on the books of French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco, has spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Belgian Pro League outfit Club Brugge.

Though managing just one goal and one assist, the South African under-23 star has been named alongside the likes of FC Barcelona rising star Ansu Fati and Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Erling Haland, which he says came as a great surprise.

"I was quite surprised when my father sent [the news] to me. I had a bit of a laugh about it [because], well, my numbers weren't really high this season," Foster tells

"But I put in a couple of good performances and, yeah, it's nice to be recognised amongst the best, and I'm just happy to be on the list.

"Like I said, I didn't really expect it but now that my name is there, I'm definitely proud and happy that it is. In the future, the dream is obviously to one day know that your name is going to be on the list for sure, and then hopefully I can win [the Golden Boy award].

"But it's really humbled me and given me extra motivation going into next season, so I'm just going to push again."
