Kamohelo Mokotjo's contract at FC Cincinnati has sensationally been bought out ahead of the Bafana Bafana midfielder's mooted return to the Netherlands.

Mokotjo is set to undergo a medical with his former club FC Twente this week ahead of a potential return to the Eredivisie after his contract with Major League Soccer (MLS) side FC Cincinnati was bought out on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old midfielder occupied an international roster slot with the United States-based outfit and had a guaranteed contract for the 2022 domestic season.

However, Cincy have elected to buy out the South Africa international's existing deal in order to free up a slot in their squad list in a move that has effectively opened the door for Mokotjo's return to the Netherlands.

"FC Cincinnati have exercised their one offseason Buyout of a Guaranteed Contract on Kamohelo Mokotjo," the club said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The midfielder will no longer occupy a spot on the team’s roster or count against the 2022 salary budget. Mokotjo was acquired in August 2020 and made 22 appearances, including 10 starts, in parts of two seasons with the Orange and Blue."
