SA 'keeper cleans house in maiden season abroad

Former Bidvest Wits and Maritzburg United goalkeeper Jethren Barr has earned widespread recognition following his debut season abroad.

Barr's maiden season in Europe with Danske Bank Premiership side Portadown FC in Northern Ireland concluded earlier this month to bring to an end a campaign in which the 26-year-old announced himself as one of the division's star players.

His performances throughout the season, which included a number of Man of the Match displays,  ultimately helped the club stave off the threat of relegation and recently earned him the club's Player of the Season award for 2021/22.

The recognition comes shortly after the former Wits and Maritzburg United keeper was chosen to be in the ULNK Team of the Season and ULNK Goalkeeper of the Season, despite his side's struggles in the league.

Barr, who remains the second-youngest-ever goalkeeper to have played in South Africa's PSL after debuting for Wits at the age of 17, kept 11 clean sheets in 38 matches over the course of the campaign for Portadown.

He has since returned to South Africa for the off-season but remains intent on staying in Europe for the foreseeable future, as discussed in the May edition of KICK OFF, with a move to a larger club looking increasingly likely following his impressive exploits.

The May edition of KICK OFF Magazine is still available to be purchased online or in stores and includes more great content on Barr's breakthrough into the PSL, life at Portadown FC and the influence players such as Andre Arendse, Rowen Fernandez and Itumeleng Khune have had on his career.
