South Africa international midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo appears to be inching closer to a return to former side FC Twente.

Mokotjo is currently a free agent after parting ways with MLS side FC Cincinnati late last year and has been training with Eredivisie side FC Twente ahead of a possible return to his former club.

The 31-year-old made 105 appearances for Twente between 2014 and 2017 and a return to his old stomping ground would see him link up with ex-coach Ron Jans, whom he previously worked under during a successful spell at fellow Dutch side PEC Zwolle.

It was initially intended that Mokotjo would undergo a trial with the club earlier this year, after arriving in January, but plans were put on hold after the former SuperSport United star's recovery from meniscus surgery took longer than anticipated.

Nonetheless, it appears as though the former Bafana Bafana international could complete his return to the club in the coming weeks after he took part in Twente's first training session ahead of the 2022/23 season on Friday.

Mokotjo will still have to prove his fitness but the signs are promising, with technical director Jan Streuer subsequently confirming that he is a "serious option" for the team ahead of the new season.

"The intention when he came here was that he would be fit around March," Streuer said, per 1Twente Enschede. "That was not the case. Now he will have to be fit and show that he is top fit to be eligible for a contract.

"He knows exactly the situation. If he's fit, he's a very good player for us. That's the situation. We're going to see what we're going to do when he's really fit. He's definitely a serious option, otherwise, we wouldn't let him train."
