Ekstein facing the chop in Azerbaijan

The prospect of relegation is facing Hendrick Ekstein with the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder’s club FK Sabail in trouble in the Azerbaijan Premyer Liqa.

Sabail have sunk to second bottom in the eight-team league with the basement club set to be demoted at the end of the season into the unfashionable second tier, the Birinci Dasta.

With one game to play Sabail are on 24 points, just one ahead of Kesla FK.

Sabail play FK Sumqayit on Wednesday in a game in which they need to win to be guaranteed of their stay in the top league without having to look over their shoulders.

A draw or defeat will mean they have to keep check of what happens in Kesla’s game.

Such have been the struggles of Ektstein’s team that they have won just five league games from the 27 that they have played this season.

They have conceded six in the last two games, which they have lost but will be will be encouraged by the fact that their season ending opponents – Sumqayit – is a team that they have already collected from this term.

Ekstein has been a regular for Sabail with 22 appearances to his name.

The 30-year-old has been a starter in all the games that he has played proving just how important he has been for the club.

He is in his second year in Azerbaijan having arrived at the beginning of last season playing for Sabah before moving to his current club.

The exciting midfielder only played for Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa.
