Zungu poised for Rangers departure

Bafana Bafana star Bongani Zungu is set to leave Rangers for a return to French club Amiens next season.

Zungu joined Rangers on loan from the Ligue 2 outfit in the January transfer window with a view to impress and earn a permanent deal with Steven Gerrard's outfit.

However, his stay with the Scottish giants resulted in a peripheral role as Gerrard's troops romped to the Scottish Premier League title.

The 28-year-old has also suffered a setback with a six-game ban from the Scottish Football Association after being found guilty of breaking Covid-19 lockdown regulations which is said to have played a role in his imminent departure.

Zungu was due to become a free agent in the upcoming off-season but signed a one-year extension with Amiens before his exit in order to complete the move to Scotland - with a £2.5-million (R50m) price tag set for a permanent switch.

However, Amiens manager Oswald Tanchot has now confirmed that the South Africa international is set to return to France once his loan officially ends.

"This season we have used 40 players which is far, far too much. It's hard to create anything with that turnaround," he told Courrier Picard.

"For next season, we won't have the services of loan players Molla Wague and Racine Coly who will return to their parent club. But we will have Bongani Zungu back, who has a year left of his contract with us."

Zungu featured 20 times for Rangers across all competitions as they won the SPL title for the first time in a decade.
