Bafana star set to leave French club

Bafana Bafana midfielder Lebogang Phiri is set to leave En Avant Guingamp at the end of this month, club president Frédéric Legrand has suggested.

Phiri, 26, joined the French club from Danish Superliga giants Brondby in July 2017 as part of an ambitious project in Ligue 1 but the script hasn't quite gone to plan over the last few seasons.

After suffering relegation in the 2018/19 campaign, Phiri remained committed to the club and was named captain in the final two years of his contract.

However, a serious knee injury ruled him out for over a year which coincided with his club woeful form in Ligue 2 but his return back in April sparked a major upturn in form as they went unbeaten in the last seven games of the season.

From relegation candidates to a ninth-place finish in the 20-team division not only highlighted his incredible influence on the team but also to potential suitors.

Speaking to Radio Bonheur, Legrand admitted it's highly unlikely that they will be able to retain him as his contract expires on 30 June.

"Lebogang Phiri had a good end to the season, but he is in demand," he confirmed.

"He intends to find a Ligue 1 [club] or even [move] abroad, we are not necessarily his first choice today."

Phiri was subject of interest from Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor and French top-flight side RC Strasbourg but it remains to be seen whether they reignite their previous interest in the talented midfielder.

The South Africa international amassed 88 appearances for EAG over four seasons, scoring once and registering four assists in his defensive midfield role.
