Mayo: Expect me to score goals for Bafana!

SA National Teams

Cape Town City forward Khanyisa Mayo has responded to his inclusion in the Bafana Bafana squad set to face Morocco in next month's Africa Cup Of Nation qualifier.

Eyebrows were raised when national team coach Hugo Broos picked the 23-year-old over the likes of Ashley du Preez and Victor Letsoalo for his final 23-man squad.

Speaking to KickOff.com today, Mayo, son of former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs striker Patrick Mayo says he deserves to represent his country.

The former SA Under-23 international has scored 5 goals in the 26 matches he has played for the Citizens this season.

"I want to thank my fans, Cape Town City family, my teammates and the technical staff, without them pushing me this season I couldn't have gotten a call-up,” Mayo says.

"The hard work that I've been putting in, the guys have been encouraging me to work on my strength, which I have been doing you know,

"I can say I was expecting it because I've been putting in the performance each and every week I've been in the starting line-up.

"I've been working very hard to achieve that you know because that was my goal to be called into the Bafana Bafana squad.

"Honestly it's a pleasure to me (Hearing coach Bruce speaking so highly of him) and I'm very, very happy.

"If I wasn't performing, the coach (Eric Tinkler) wouldn't have started me in all the games,

"And as for (Broos) speaking highly of me, it's a positive thing I should take forward to the national team, to cement a place in the national team and qualify for the next AFCON.

"You can expect the same Khanyisa Mayo who's been on form and scoring goals, and we will qualify for the AFCON with the kind of players that I'll be playing with for the first time,

"But people, they can expect a goalscoring Khanyisa Mayo who will be scoring for the national team as people have been criticising Bafana Bafana saying that they are not scoring,

"So you can expect a Khanyisa Mayo that will score goals for Bafana Bafana,” he said.
