Left-back Patrick Phungwayo wore the jersey number 21 last season and his future with the club remains uncertain. With Innocent Maela, Marc van Heerden and Thabo Matlaba, who can play both at right-back and left- back, Phungwayo’s chances of playing regularly at Pirates are slim.
“The numbers are given preference to people who start, so it does not mean anything. You’ll see that [Thembinkosi] Lorch has taken the jersey number three,” Pirates administrator Floyd Mbele told KickOff.com.
“Patrick is still with the club. The technical [team] must decide, with the numbers of left-backs we have in the team, what’s the way forward. We’ve got left-backs at the moment, so it’s a conversation a technical team must deal with. But he is still with the club.”
Phungwayo’s representative, Mike Makaab, said they hope to know where they stand this week. KickOff.com requested to speak to Makaab over the phone, but he said he is unavailable in a message.
“I'm not available, but we'll know where he stands over the next few days,” Makaab said.
Makaab would not confirm if Phungwayo could leave the club before the transfer window closes on August 31.
