After just one substitute appearance in the Telkom Knockout over the first half of the season for SuperSport United, the 20-year-old joined Ajax Cape Town on loan for the remainder of the campaign, where he has since thrived, making 13 appearances with two goals and two assist to his name thus far.
Despite the loan agreement coming to an end at the culmination of the season, Ertugral says he is not sure where the player’s immediate future lies, but hopes he can continue working alongside the young talent with whom he enjoys a “special relationship”.
“I have a special relationship with him,” Ertugral said.
“But the decision is with him because today’s players are like stock market exchange. He is very hot property, but I also can tell you that he doesn’t want to go somewhere else than working with me, because it was like with Tendai [Ndoro] as well, you have that special bond.”
Ertugral believes Lakay could definitely make the grade overseas, believing only one South African club could lure him to stay in the PSL a bit longer, but is hoping to try squeeze one more season out of him with the Urban Warriors.
“He is such a big talent and if he can stay another season with me at Ajax, I think he is done in South Africa. Overseas - I think he has a chance for that,” the Turkish coach said.
“There is only one team that can really attract him, in my opinion, as they’re playing in the Champions League and winning all the titles, I think that’s the other team that will go for him. I don’t need to tell you who, you know better than me.
“But I would really like to work with him in future, though sometimes it’s out of our hands. But I talked to him and told him he’s not going anywhere besides with me, so hopefully he’ll stay.”
