Chiefs recently awarded development product Happy Mashiane a promotion to the first team following his displays for the reserve team in the Multichoice Diski Challenge.
The 21-year-old defender made his debut for Amakhosi over the weekend, starting at left wingback before being relieved of duty in the 74th minute as the team went on to edge the ABC Motsepe League side courtesy of a lone own-goal from Abongile Twani in extra-time.
Overall, Mashiane attempted 49 passes with an 86 percent pass-success rate – the third highest on the park, as well as 100 percent success in his two attempted dribbles.
Middendorp has since applauded the youngster’s showing on debut but remained wary of possible complacency creeping in.
“I believe we have a fantastic new signing in Happy. We hope he will continue working hard and keep his feet on the ground.”
Mashiane looks to have overtaken Godfrey Walusimbi in the pecking order after the Ugandan international was omitted from the cup squad, despite the absence of Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya through suspension.
