Mahlambi off to Portugal

Mahlambi bagged the Absa Premiership Young Player of the Season gong at the PSL Awards gala on Monday night, after managing six goals and six assists in just eight starts as Wits clinched their maiden league title last season.

The junior international, who made his Bafana Bafana debut in an international friendly against Angola in March earlier this year, suffered a serious knee injury in his debut season with the Clever Boys last year and spent nine months on the sidelines.

However, this did not stop scouts from seeing his potential and has since been afforded an opportunity to try and impress, and possibly earn himself a move to Europe in the coming weeks.

“He’s going oversees this week – to Portugal. They’ll have a look at him there and let him train for about three weeks, which is good,” Wits coach Gavin Hunt has confirmed. “It’s before the start of the season but hopefully, please God, he makes it.”

Hunt was uncertain as to which team would be assessing Mahlambi but made mention of Primeira Liga sides Sporting Lisbon, where Wits Academy graduate Liam Jordan is currently at, and Bongani Zungu and Haashim Domingo's Vitoria Guimaraes as possible destinations.

Having spent the last two-and-a-half years with the 19-year-old starlet, Hunt believes he still needs plenty of guidance and a healthy breeding ground in order to reach his full potential.

“He’s a good fun-loving boy, I just think he still needs a lot of guidance. He’s raw but he’s got huge and exciting ability, and if he can harness that ability and get into the right environment I think his potential is endless,” added the newly crowned Absa Premiership Coach of the Season.

“He didn’t play the first round of the season for us, which was a blow. He came in the second round, started off well and then faded a little bit but he’s a young boy man, you know, he needs time."
