Following the departure of star centre-back Rivaldo Coetzee to Mamelodi Sundowns, a new-look Urban Warriors defence has yet to keep a clean sheet this season, with centre-back pairing Isaac Nhlapo and Mario Booysen yet to gel, while Roscoe Pietersen has been out due to suspension.
The Cape club have since decided to bolster their defensive department with their Burkinabe trialist, who coach Menzo reveals impressed from the start.
"Ouattara was offered to us by the agent of [Lassina] Traore, and he was here on trial," he says. “And after just one training match, everyone was saying, 'Wow, that’s a good player, a good defender'. He’s a right-footed defender, strong, and coming from Burkina Faso, he’s probably not had, with all due respect, the best education there, and at this level, there is always room to improve.
"He is someone who will become a better player. When the scouts and I saw him, we immediately thought of [Colombian international Davinson] Sanchez at Ajax Amsterdam [now at Tottenham Hotspur] – he has the same physique, so that’s the kind of player he is."
Ajax have yet to officially unveil Ouattara, and are still working on obtaining the young defender’s work permit ahead of their next fixture against Polokwane City on Friday evening.
