Bidvest Wits face the possibility of losing a Kaizer Chiefs target for free at the end of the season.
According to a reliable source, midfielder Thabang Monare will be free to sign with a team of his choice come January on a pre-contract, as he will enter into the final six months of his current deal with the Clever Boys.
Absa Premiership giants Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns are believed to have put Monare on top of their wish lists.
There's been contradicting information on the expiry date of the player's contract with Wits, but KickOff.com has been informed that he is in the final year of his deal.
"Yes Monare's contract at Wits ends on 30 June next year," a source tells KickOff.com.
"No one said anything to him about the interest from Chiefs and Downs. He is very much focused here at Wits right now and he will see about his future whenever the day comes."
Monare, who will be turning 30 on September 16, has featured in three of the four league games the Clever Boys have played so far.
Wits head coach Gavin Hunt couldn't be reached for a comment, while CEO Jose Ferreira has since quit.
