Mamelodi Sundowns announced the signing of South American striker Mauricio Affonso on Wednesday, so what can the club's supporters expect to see from the lanky Uruguayan forward?
Affonso, who was playing his football in Peru before Sundowns snapped him up, is the type of striker who loves getting into good areas in the box. When wingers or central midfielders have the ball at their feet, Affonso always looks to make the right type of run so that the ball gets played in his direction.
With so many ball playing midfielders in the Sundowns side, Affonso will always get the service he needs and he’ll just need to make sure that he buries the opportunities.
He wins a lot of aerial battles, making him a big threat for the opposition whenever set pieces are whipped into the box.
It remains to be seen how he will fit into the Sundowns side that did not really have a target man upfront last season. Pitso Mosimane sometimes used Lebohang Maboe as a false nine, while Emiliano Tade, who joined in January, was used upfront, but enjoys making runs in and around the box.
