Jose Ali Meza made an unexpected return to the Mamelodi Sundowns starting line-up earlier this week and head coach Pitso Mosimane has explained what the player has done to get himself back into the team.
Meza was expected to leave before the close of the transfer window and even spent a few days on trial with Maritzburg United, but nothing materialised for the South American forward.
Despite having a good pre-season, Meza has struggled to get game time, but he got a chance to start in the MTN8 second leg semi-final against SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday and will be hoping for more opportunities going forward.
Meza, who made 13 appearances in all competitions last season, had not played a game for the defending Absa Premiership champions since January 29.
“He’s been doing well. He’s been running, he’s been playing games and he’s been scoring. He scored in Botswana, in Mbombela [during pre-season]. He’s been doing well, and we take it from there,” Mosimane said.
Meza could get another opportunity upfront when Sundowns take on Maritzburg United at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday (18h00). Sundowns are fifth on the standings while Maritzburg are all the way down in 14th place.
